Sweden’s climate policy – in short
Sweden's climate policy - in short
Sweden is committed to having net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. In order to show the way forward, parliament introduced an ambitious climate policy in 2017. We believe that we have set an example that should be followed. Here’s why:
The policy framework aims to:
- Create order and stability in climate policy.
- Provide business and society with long-term conditions to implement the transition needed to address the challenge of climate change.
- Set out implementation of the Paris Agreement in Sweden. The climate policy is a key component of Sweden’s efforts to comply with the agreement.
What good does a policy do?
In essence, a policy framework helps you drive long term change. Here’s proof:
- When our climate policy was introduced in 2017 it was estimated that we would reach 33 m tonnes of CO2 equivalents by 2030.
- In 2021 – when our climate policy had been at work for 4 years – the estimate was 25 m tonnes of CO2 equivalents by 2030.
Sweden’s climate policy framework is having an impact.
